Here in New Jersey I've been currently advocating for a piece of legislation, S2786, that will enable trans people to change the gender marker on their birth certificates without necessarily having surgery if their medical provider deems it not necessary. It is a common sense bill that streamlines a government function and takes delaying or political options out of the hands of bureaucrats by standardizing in a simple form. It puts the decision in the hands of licensed medical professionals and allows for updates as medical protocols change.
Among the remarkable citizen lobbyists with whom I've been working is a woman who recently and prematurely retired from the US Army after a distinguished service career. Prematurely, yes,... let's go back a few years to understand why and put things in perspective.
